Excited to be teaching again! Hope to see you there. xo
Thank you for popping by, I am taking a sabbatical from teaching until my kiddos go back to school. Until then, I hope you browse around and explore some articles and inspirations. I would love to hear from you and connect, you can reach me at email@example.com.
Don’t you just want to do that sometimes? Crumple and cry like a three year old. It looks so freeing. (Be honest, no shame here.)
We’ve been there. Life doesn’t stop for you to catch your breath and respond in the perfect way. Life is full and fast and can be unrelenting. In the heat of the moment you snap. You feel everything at once… how tired you are, how loud they are, how embarrassing this is… and then it’s all over, you’re yelling, your day is ruined… and then you feel bad and they feel bad…
Pssst! There is another way!
Rachel and Jessica here!
We’ve been there. We’ve had the checkout line moment… several, in fact. And not only have we lived to tell about it, we’ve learned to experience it in new ways. And we have some insights to share about compassionate parenting.
Sometimes you just need to take a MOMent.
We’ve created a workshop to take you through a new experience, to empower you to do things… differently. When those moments happen (*cough, daily*) you will have the tools you need to change your habitual responses and to begin to show up in a new way. You know, like those moms in the commercials.
The Conscious MOMents workshop is a “how to” course that focuses on the ways we can get ourselves calm before we engage with our children.
We will share…

It’s still hot and sunny, but school is around the corner and your child or maybe YOU have back to school jitters. The first step is to recognize that school jitters are normal and a natural bodily response to change. There is a mixture of feelings going on for all of us; we are sad the summer is coming to an end because we had more flexibility in our schedules, we are excited to reunite with friends and regain structure again, we are nervous if we don’t like our teachers, so the combination of excitement and anxiety makes our tummy and heart feel all jittery. After we acknowledge and communicate to ourselves and children that this is “NORMAL,” we are able shift and create peace in our mind and body. It’s a great way to bond with your child and share that in life we are going to feel nervous, worried and excited and we have the power to take over our jitters with our thoughts and breath!
Here are two simple activities that can help you and your children move past the jitters into a calmer state of mind.
Calming Jar Activity–This simple exercise works wonders! All you need is a mason jar with a lid, water and glitter. Fill the jar to the top and add glitter. Shake the jar and watch the glitter float and spin around. This is an illustration of how our worries and fears swirl around in our minds. When we pause, take a breath and watch the glitter settle to the bottom, it remind us when we are still, our thoughts will settle like the glitter and we will see clearly and feel calm again. Breathe in and Breathe out: I am calm.
Squeeze and Breathe–Is a breath technique that helps with frustration, anxiety and anger. Interlace your hands and place your hands on your belly. Release your head and gaze at your belly as you squeeze your hands together and breathe in and breathe out 5x. Feel yourself gain control over your fluttering emotions as you squeeze and breathe and melt your nervous system back into homeostasis. Breathe in and Breathe out: I am peace.
Turn the corners of your mouth upright and watch your children move past back to school jitters into back to school peace.
Dear Kids Yoga Teacher,
Place one hand on your heart and the other hand on your belly and take three long slow deep breaths. Visualize yourself as an eagle soaring back in time to capture a bird’s eye view of the landscape of yoga then and to what is to come; notice that in 1976, only 5 million people practiced yoga compared with the 20 million people practicing today-quite a leap! This increase is significant to keep in mind as we take a look at how yoga in schools is growing and being challenged as a violation of the 1st Amendment in cases such as the lawsuit in Encinitas Union District in California and the recent banning of ‘namaste’ at Bullard Elementary in Kennesaw, GA. These two instances have been resolved with sensitivity and respect, and it is our job to continue to teach self-regulation yoga techniques in a public-school friendly way. If you are wondering how to keep yoga in alignment with the 1st Amendment, check out this article called “3 Ways to Keep Yoga Pea-Cey!”
The intention of this letter is to encourage you to stay the course in the kids yoga movement and be reminded that you are plowing a new path for children to learn how to de-stress with their body and brain. With any new movement that grows at rapid speeds, there will be tidal waves, like lawsuits and protests against the very thing that ushers in peace, but don’t lose heart, get defensive or angry because patience and tolerance will unite both sides.
The evolution of acceptance grows at a slow pace, and yoga in schools is at the beginning phase of this process. Let’s take a look how these familiar and frequent terms in public schools don’t make us question the constitution today….
Now bring your attention back to your breath, feel your heartbeat with your hand and feel your other hand rise and fall as you gently breathe in and out. You soar back to right now in 2016 with the awareness that you are right in the middle of the evolution of acceptance. Turn the corners of your mouth up right and smile that you get to teach children to breathe and connect with themselves, as you focus your intention on the “tools” that help children, rather than the “terms” that cause barriers, so that the kids don’t miss out on the gift that yoga brings to the mind and body. Let’s soar above controversy and embrace the process.
From my heart to yours,
The Tale of Three Trees A Traditional Folktale retold by Angela Elwell Hunt
|“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
Sometimes our hopes and dreams get shattered, so we think…
We are going to read “The Tale of THREE TREES: A TRADITIONAL FOLKTALE,” retold by Angela Elwell Hunt.
|Breathwork||Simple Seated–Close your eyes and picture yourself sitting on a mountaintop. Breathe in and out slowly, as you dream about what you want to be when you grow up.
|Warm-up||Mountain Pose–“Once upon a mountain top”
Forward Fold–Dream about what you want to be when you grow up
Reverse Swan Dive–3 times to represent the THREE TREES
|Pose Series||Star Pose–The first little tree said–“I want to hold treasure.”
Boat Pose–The second little tree said–“I want to be a strong sailing ship.”
Tree Pose–The third little tree said–“I want to grow so tall.”
Mountain Climbers–“One day three woodcutters climbed the mountain.”
Child’s PoseCat/Cow/Donkey–The first tree was “filled with hay for hungry animals.”
Canoe Pose–The second tree was “ too small and too weak to sail an ocean.”
Plank Pose–The third tree was “confused when the woodcutter cut her into strong beams and left her in a lumber yard.” What happened?
Are their dreams coming true right now? No.But, many years later…
Happy Baby–“The first tree knew he was holding the greatest treasure in the world.”
Boat Pose–“The second tree knew he was carrying the King of heaven and earth.”
Cross Pose–”The third tree knew that God’s love had changed everything.”
|Cool Down||Seated Forward Fold–Breathe in and out slowly and think about the THREE TREES.
Knees to Chest–Wrap your arms around your shins and give yourself a big hug.
Gentle Spinal Twist–Know that wherever you turn God is with you making your dreams come true.
|Resting||Bedtime Pose–Relax your whole body like you are resting to go to sleep. Close your eyes and breathe in and breathe out. Think about the dreams of the trees and how their dreams came true. God plants dreams in our hearts and sometimes the way our dreams come true, don’t always go as we plan. But–“It made the first tree beautiful. It made the second tree strong. And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God.”
Simple Seated–“That was better than being the tallest tree in the world.”
